Letter To An Artist
An artist shared some work with Zen Master Jok Um and asked what he thought.
In reflecting on my views on material you shared, I realized that my views were not really that important. What's more important, to me, is to voice some inquiries for you that arise from unvoiced inquiries I see in your work, which want more of a voice.
Why have passions?
Why have ideas?
Why want?
Why think?
Why feel?
Why make things?
Art, to me, has four voices: Look at this. Look at me. Look at you. Look. They all have some value and purpose. These are all richer, if they arise from the last one.
You have talent. The voice in that isn't speaking to these yet. What are your views here?
